Ways to Participate

Altshul is community driven and depends on the participation of volunteers. There are many ways to participate and we encourage everyone to get involved.

Prayer

Our spirited services follow a traditional liturgy and are completely volunteer-led. We meet on the second and fourth Shabbat morning and the third Friday night of each month, as well as on select holidays. To volunteer and to learn more, contact gabbai@altshul.org.

Social and Hospitality

Promoting connections between members outside of shul as well as within it, Altshul organizes kiddush after Shabbat morning services, picnics, community lunches and hosted meals. Please join us for any or all of these or email social@altshul.org for more details.

Families

Altshul offers many family friendly opportunities, including Kindershul and a parents list-serve where you can find out about Altshul kids’ activities and happenings in the community. For more information and to join the list-serve, email kids@altshul.org.

Lifecycle Committee

At Alshul, we share in each others lifecycle events. The lifecycle committee organizes meals for families with a new baby, hospital visits, and Shiva minyans. For more information and to join the committee, email lifecycle@altshul.org.

Tikkun

The Tikkun Committee works with the community through volunteerism and local activism. Currently, we are partnering with Providence House, a transitional shelter in Park Slope. Other events organized by the Tikkun Committee include bone marrow registry drives, making mishloach manot for a local senior center, and a Prospect Park clean-up day. For more information about social action and social justice at Altshul and to volunteer, email Rena.

Set-up and Clean-up for Services

Altshul relies on its members to run services each week, and that includes coming early to set up books and get the room in order, staying afterward to clean up, and setting up and cleaning up for Kiddush.  If you’d like to help out in any one of these ways, please contact volunteer@altshul.org.

Compost Committee

The Compost Committee works to reduce Altshul’s carbon footprint. Activities include composting, an easy and fun way to clean contaminated soil, prevent pollution, and enrich the earth. For more information and to volunteer, email Leah.
