The question below was part of the Altshul community survey, run November/December 2007:
A question has been raised about the way in which we, as a community, say the prayer for the State of Israel. At the moment we all rise and say the prayer aloud. Given the variety of political, religious and national understandings of Israel, a suggestion has been made as a way to accommodate the diversity of relationships our community has with Israel. The suggestion is to make a number of prayers available and for individuals to choose which one they'd like to say, or say their own. We would still rise and then say our prayers for Israel to ourselves at the same time. What is your response to a possible move in this direction?
